The stars aligned Tuesday night in New York City when Broadway’s best claimed their Broadway.com Audience Awards at a reception held for the winners.
The website’s annual awards allow the fans to pick their favorite performances, and this year’s winners included plenty of film and TV actors, including Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Matthew Morrison, Vanessa Hudgens, Helen Mirren, Kristin Chenoweth and Darren Criss.
Hudgens, who is making her Broadway debut in Gigi, won for favorite breakthrough performance (female). “I’ve never worked this hard before in my life,” the former High School Musical star told PEOPLE at the awards reception. She added that Broadway is not for the faint of heart, “But it’s so much fun. Whenever I have my day off, I look forward to coming back to the stage and doing it again.”
“Everyone has been so warm, so welcoming. My cast is like my family. I lean on them, I love them,” she told PEOPLE. On what has surprised her most about Broadway, the 26-year-old says, “it’s a lot of work, doing the same thing over and again, it makes you feel a little crazy at times.”
Vanessa Hudgens says that her relationship with Zac Efron sometimes looked better on screen.
The actress and singer, 26, opened up about the jealousy she felt while dating her High School Musical sweetheart, 27, who was bombarded with female attention.
“I went through a phase when I was really mean because I was so fed up,” Hudgens revealed in a New York Times article Sunday.
“Girls were running after him, and I was giving them death stares. Then I realized that’s not what that’s about,” she continued.
But the Gimme Shelter actress has a new golden rule to live by when it comes to respecting those around her: “Spread the love, be a good person, they support you, be nice,” she said.
She and the Neighbors star split in 2010. Hudgens is now dating and living with actor-model Austin Butler, 23, according to the New York Times.
The actress is also busy with the stage adaptation of Colette’s 1945 novel Gigi, in which she makes her Broadway debut.
The show follows a free-spirited young girl living in Paris at the turn of the 20th century who is forced to become the companion of a wealthy playboy. The title role was made famous by Audrey Hepburn in 1951.
“It’s been a lot of fun prepping for Gigi … allowing myself to be as free as possible. I love this character, the music and play so much,” Hudgens told PEOPLE in November.
Gigi opens April 8 at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York City.

As BroadwayWorld previously reported, High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens is coming to Broadway in the upcoming Broadway revival of Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s Gigi. The production will open in a pre-Broadway tryout at the Kennedy Center. According to the Washington Post, Hudgens had a head cold on the first day of rehearsal, but never considered skipping the first rehearsal because of it. Hudgens said, “You can’t miss the first day of school.”
The article also quoted cast members praising Hudgens’ attitude and disposition. Tony Award winner Victoria Clark commented, “She is literally the warmest, sweetest person in the world.”
Set in the magical world of La Belle Epoque in turn-of-the-century Paris, Gigi is a timeless romantic comedy about a young woman groomed in the custom of her family to be a companion to a bored, wealthy playboy, until the two unexpectedly realize this is in fact true love.
This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the debut of Gigi on Broadway. Lerner and Loewe’s Tony Award-winning score was first heard in the 9-time Academy Award-winning Best Picture of the same name, directed by Vincente Minnelli. The movie, which was the last of the classic MGM musicals, was based on the Broadway play by Anita Loos and the popular novella by Colette.
The 25-year-old actress’s new feature with Flaunt mag just debuted on news stands the day before and she opened up about her upcoming music!
Yes! I’ll be working on music, actually. I’ll be collaborating with my best friend—so, you know—that’s an adventure,” Vanessa confirmed.
She added about the sound, “Probably something that you’re definitely not expecting.”
Vanessa Hudgens, 24, stars in Spring Breakers, in theaters March 22. This week she chatted with PEOPLE:
Last country I visited
Italy. I think [Rome] is the most magical city in the world. The food is to die for. I’m a foodie with a bottomless stomach, so I went crazy.
Last time I went black tie
Oscar night. I went to Vanity Fair and Madonna’s party, which is always a blast. Selena [Gomez] and I went together and got ready together.
SoulCycle. When I first started going, I was there twice a day. I close my eyes and bang my head [to the music] and wake up the next morning with a sore neck, feeling like I’ve been to a rock concert. It’s really good therapy.
Last time I lost my wallet
At Coachella. That was a major disaster. I was carrying my life in this tiny pouch. Luckily I couldn’t have cared less in the end.
