DMI Soundtracks has announced the immediate availability on iTunes of the New Broadway Cast Recording for Gigi, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s beloved Oscar and Tony Award-winning musical comedy. The recording was produced and engineered by six-time Grammy Award winner Frank Filipetti. The CD is slated for release in June.
Gigi stars Vanessa Hudgens, who makes her Broadway debut in the title role, Tony Award-winner Victoria Clark (The Light in the Piazza, Sister Act, Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella) as Mamita, Corey Cott (Newsies) as Gaston Lachaille, three-time Tony Award-nominee Dee Hoty (The Will Rogers Follies, The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public, Footloose) as Aunt Alicia, two-time Tony Award-nominee Howard McGillin (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Anything Goes) as Honoré Lachaille and Steffanie Leigh (Mary Poppins) as Liane d’Exelmans.
In case you haven’t heard already, in the revival of Gigi on Broadway, Honoré Lachaille does not open the musical with the famous Lerner and Loewe song “Thank Heaven for Little Girls,” as Maurice Chevalier does in the 1958 film, playing that role. Instead the tune, which adapter Heidi Thomas deemed a little inappropriate coming from an aging playboy, is sung by the title character’s grandmother (Victoria Clark) and great-aunt (Dee Hoty) while reflecting on their own youth.
“Heidi Thomas, our writer, did such a phenomenal job of keeping the heart and soul of the original Gigi but making it accessible to modern-day audiences,” says the show’s star Vanessa Hudgens at the opening-night party at Tavern on the Green in New York on Wednesday night.
Even though the story, based on a 1944 Colette novella, follows a young courtesan-in-training who is wooed by a much older playboy, Thomas focused on the love story, wanting to make it more romantic rather than potentially predatory. In the film and in the 1973 Broadway flop, the age gap between man-about-town Gaston and Gigi was much larger, though Thomas confirms that she hasn’t changed the original intention by shrinking the age divide.
“It’s still a big gap in terms of experience, because he’s a young man of the world and she has been very sheltered,” explains Thomas, who is most recognized stateside for her work on the popular British series Call the Midwife. “So I feel that that gap in experience plays in the same way without actually imposing the profound level of distaste for that relationship and for this property as a musical.”

Tickets are now on sale to see Vanessa Hudgens make her Broadway debut in Gigi.
Hudgens stars in the revival as a vivacious young woman coming of age in turn of the century Paris. The score by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe includes such classics as “Thank Heaven for Little Girls,” “The Night They Invented Champagne” and “I Remember It Well.” Co-starring alongside Hudgens are Corey Cott (Newsies) as Gaston, Tony winner Victoria Clark (Cinderella) as Mamita and Tony nominee Howard McGillin (The Phantom of the Opera) as Honore.
Gigi begins previews on March 19 at the Neil Simon Theatre with an opening night set for April 8. Get tickets!
Following in the footsteps of NBC’s “Peter Pan: Live,” FOX has announced “Dancing With the Stars” judge Julianne Hough and “High School Musical” star Vanessa Hudgens are set to star in “Grease: Live.”
The two will play Sandy and Rizzo in the live musical event for the network being produced by Marc Platt (“Into The Woods”). “Grease: Live” will be a live television production of “Grease” that will provide a new take on the classic musical for a new generation.
“‘Grease’ is one of the movies that made me want to be an entertainer, and I have literally been waiting my whole life to play Sandy,” Hough says in a statement. “My siblings and I watched it and played it out over and over when we were kids. This is my dream role and performing it live on television will be one of the most thrilling opportunities I’ve had in my career so far.”
Adds Hudgens, “Being Rizzo is something I’ve never imagined, and I love that because it will be a new challenge. She is such an iconic character that continues to transcend generations. I cannot wait to bring her to life on live television. I’m going to be a Pink Lady!”
“Grease: Live” is set to air January 31, 2016 on FOX.
Vanessa Hudgens is moving from high school musicals to the big leagues.
Producers announced on Wednesday that the High School Musical star will take on the title role in the new production of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s Gigi, which will play at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. from Jan. 16-Feb. 12 ahead of a planned 2015 Broadway run.
“I started performing in musicals from a young age, and it has always been my dream to be on Broadway,” Hudgens said in a statement. “I cannot wait to get back on stage, singing and dancing these songs and living in Gigi’s glamorous world.”
Hudgens played the role in a private industry workshop of the musical, which took place over the summer in New York. The workshop also featured Newsies star Corey Cott and Tony-winner Victoria Clark, though additional casting for the Kennedy Center and Broadway runs of the musical has not been announced.
“We absolutely fell in love with Vanessa and we know that audiences will too,” producer Jenna Segal said in a statement. “She has a huge worldwide following, and it’s easy to understand why, once you see her on stage. She just has that special something, and we’re thrilled to have her with us to bring our new Gigi to life.”
Audrey Hepburn played the role in Anita Loos’ play adaptation of the novel by Colette in 1951 on Broadway, and Lerner and Loewe, known for My Fair Lady, adapted the material into a movie musical for MGM in 1958, which won nine Academy Awards including Best Picture. The musical debuted on Broadway in 1973, winning the Tony Award for Best Score.
This revival includes a new adaptation by British playwright Heidi Thomas, and the production will feature songs from the movie which were not included in its initial Broadway production.
“I have been living with Colette’s feisty, elegant, feline Gigi in my imagination for a long time now — and in Vanessa Hudgens, she is finally made flesh,” said Thomas.
For a while now, rumours have been swirling about a sequel to last year’s hit movie Spring Breakers, except this time, the movie would be without producer Harmony Korine‘s consent.
Will the stars of the original film, including Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Selena Gomez, and Rachel Korine be featured in the new one?
When the news first broke of the potential sequel, James Franco took to his instagram to address the rumours, saying: “The original was wholly Harmony’s creation and these producers are capitalizing on that innovative film to make money on a weak sequel. I want everyone to know that whoever is involved in the sequel is jumping on board a poison ship…It will be a terrible film.”
Now, Vanessa has opened up about the movie herself, telling HollywoodLife: “I love what we did with Spring Breakers! I think that it is amazing and it is something that we are all proud of.”
“I don’t think any of us are a part of the second one so I am not sure what they are doing, I am not sure what it is even about, but I mean good luck!”
Standing by Harmony Korine, Vanessa continued: “If you don’t have Harmony, I don’t understand how its Spring Breakers, but…”
Just like James and Vanessa, Ashley Benson has also dished that she won’t be joining the Spring Breakers 2 cast either. “I got the email that we were going to do another one,” Ashley said. “as of now I would like to leave it as it is. I haven’t met with the director yet. I haven’t read a script either…that movie is so different, and I don’t know if you could do another one like that. Especially if Harmony isn’t the eye directing it. If there is another one and I am not a part of it, it will do great…they will get four new girls.”
Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale (“High School Musical”) will lend their voices to the indie animated feature “The Great Migration” from screenwriter Kevin G. Schmidt (“Cheaper by the Dozen”).
Hudgens and Tisdale star alongside Kendall Schmidt and Logan Henderson in the film, the plot of which centers on a predator who threatens the local ecosystem.
“The idea for ‘The Great Migration’ arrived in my email inbox via a weekly newsletter from an alternative physician I follow in Chicago. The film centers on a group of characters that encounter a mutated predator threatening to destroy the balance of their environment,” said screenwriter Schmidt.
In addition, the cast members will lend their voices to an original soundtrack in support of the film, which is set up at newly-formed CMI Entertainment.
